Default Timing adjustment

I am having my local mechanic install new camshaft seals and bearings, a Torrington bearing, tappet rollers and axles, and anything else needed. I am reinstalling the pushrods and heads myself and was just curious about how I should get the timing in sync. I removed the cam before I read to etch the locations before removing. Can the mechanic adjust the timing with the cylinders open, or does the timing have to be done once the bike is back together ? Any input or advice is appreciated and if you know any good online links, can you post them as well? Thanks again

first of all what type of bike, year and model? initial timing is done at the cam install, and from there if it is a newer model that will be it. adjusting the pushrods will be easy if you have basic mechanical knowledge. from what you say you are doing the pushrod and head install yourself. the cams are just as easy to install and time. if you are doing the rest save the coin and do the cam install yourself!

The bike is a 92 Heritage Classic Evo. I'm just a little worried about getting the stock bearing out to put the torrington in. Is there a special tool used or an easy technique to remove it?

you can get a bearing removal/install kit from amazon.com or ebay, it is very easy if you follow the directions in your shop manual, same with the timing!

Now what about the pinion shaft bearing? Is that something difficult to install? Someone told me there is a spec size that you can measure and if its off, replace it. Does anyone know the size?
