I've had my bike almost 2 years, bought it with the SE 95 kit already installed (unsure of what cams or other parts in it) and it's performed FLAWLESSLY since the day I bought it. Last Friday I rode the bike to work (nice and cool 70 degree morning). Crunk it up about noon to ride home and all the sudden the top end is making a rattling/clunking noise. Kinda of hard to describe but it's directly under the gas tank. You can feel it, hear it, etc....but ONLY when the bike is moving. It does increase with RPM. If the bike is sitting still and you rev it up, the noise cant be heard. But the noise is def directly under/around the gas tank area.
It runs fine, runs normal, no oil light, and temps are just fine. Any ideas before I go digging into this thing or pay someone to check it out? Is there anything under the tank that could've came loose (nut, bolt, washer, etc) that could be causing this? All the bolts holding the tank to the bike are secure and tight. Thanks in advance for your help!
I'm afraid it could be a lifter failing, and if this is the case I should be able to tell easy by taking the pushrod covers off and checking for play, correct?
If it were here, we'd be pulling the cam chest open, as that is the area that most T/C issues stem from.
Cam bearings, lifters, cam chain tensioners, etc.
Scott
I don't disagree with Scott; however, the fact that the noise came on so sudden and only presents when moving would give me cause to take a peek in the primary for chain adjustment, worn tensioner and a compensator that is loose or has a "tired" spring pack. I know you think the noise is coming from right under the gas tank but noises from these TCs can be very deceptive when trying to locate the source.
Def not riding it anymore. All I had time to do today was remove the pushrod tube and check out the rods....turns out I have adjustable pushrods (awesome...didn't know that)...and there's zero play in any of them. The oil looks extremely bubbly too (assuming not good!)
