I would charge the battery with a small charger made for motorcycle battery's. running the bike will not charge a battery up the charging system is made to maintain the charge not bring a battery up after being discharged. A Battery tender is also made to maintain the battery's charge and not bring it up from discharge.
After battery is charged and you put gas in it see if it will start. then see what caused the soot.
A friend of mine was letting his bike idle for an extended time trying to the same thing(charging battery) and when I drove up we both noticed smoke coming off his engine area, so he shut it down. I reminded him that Harleys are air cooled(at least our bikes are!) and it was not a good idea to let it idle very long. Anyway not sure what was cooking but there was a lot of smoke from being overheated. We went on the 4 hour ride with no issues.
Gave in, couldn't get it started so called the dealer.....sent a meat wagon for my girl
The guy said it looked like maybe an electrical issue as he saw no damage to either head gasket.......to be continued......
[quoharness caught fire.
te=BC45;12077940]I wonder if maybe the heat melted the wire harness under the tank causing the soot.[/quote]
After taking it the dealer and having them look at it, that's exactly what happened BC45.....wiring harness caught fire.
Now the battle to see if the warranty will cover it.....Lesson learned:/
