Default engine upgrade

First off, will the new 96 inch harley motor fit my 2000 softail standard? Next, my motor was dyno'ed and produced: 78.52hp and 88.48 torque. My question is do you think it's worth the $2500 or so to do an engine upgrade to a 95 inch(my dealer says it will increase my hp to 100)? I'm trying to decided whether to do the upgrade or install a 96 inch motor(if it fits my bike)? I'mnot verymechanically inclined. Thanks fella's.

For $2500 bucks worth of parts, which is what I paid with special tools to do it my self, you can have a bike pushing 100/100 or better easly. This will eat any stock 96er on the road hands down. The 96 would be great to build on as it is all ready mildly stroked but then you are back to buying the crate motor and then spending more to hop it up. The stock 96 depending on who you talk to only added a few hp to none and around 10 to 15 torque. More grunt for sure but not to justify cost of new motor just for 10lbs.

Just don't forget that it's the torque that matters most to most riders. That's the raw twisting power and you want that to be a pretty high number and pretty flat (a flat line on a graph) from 2,000 to 4,000 RPMs or so. More plainly said, it's what gets the bike off the line and moving in the low to mid rpm range. That's where most of us do most of our operating and when we need the most power. Your 88 foot pounds of torque sound pretty decent to me.

I had a 2005 Heritage with V and H 2 into 1 pro pipe HS, SE Breather, P Commander and S&S 510 gear drive cams. A good dyno tune pulled it into the low to mid 90's on both HP and torque. I thought it was plenty for a "grown up." I could really feel the difference, too.

A stage 1 96 is not going to make any better numbers than your current bike - put the money into building the one you have

Take that 2500 bucks and have some good head work done, cams, tuner,
and the rest. Way better than swapping the engine.[:-]
