Wheel bearing adjustment. help please
I am overhauling my Model U and am having problems with wheel bearings adjustment. The axle tube has about 2mm of play on the non adjustable side (brake side). Is this OK? I fear that the bearing may have at some point spun and worn away at the hub flange it rests against leading to this free play. Any advice welcome. Thanks

Are your brgs Std or oversized?Dont mix them up or you will need a micrometer to seperate them.Start with 5 shims,no gasket to check end play usually .003 to .005".Shims are around .002' thick.Add shims till thrust spacer doesnt turn and the remove 2shims.Hub may be out of limits but someone recuts for newer style brgs.Im not familiar with the outcome.The spacers sometime wear down from being set wrong previously,or rear wheel axle cranked down to tight.Check it out for wear.Rollers go o/s in .002' increments and should be .001 to.0015' running fit.

I am running standard size bearings. I have been shimming up the adjustment side OK. The problem is that on the brake drum side it is possible to pull the axle tube outwards about 1mm from where it is resting on the step in the axle. Perhaps I should try and post a diagram?
