I have built and rode VLs and if adjusted properly Harley never made a jock shifter of a suicide clutch. They made tank shift and rock rocker clutches. I built and road a 1942 45 and a 1946 UL which I rode as a daily runner for years.
A suicide clutch is like in a car when you take your foot off it, it engages. Harley rocker clutch when you disengage it stays where you put it until you rock it forward to engage. A jock shifter is not on the take but coming right off the transmission near the middle down tube of the frame.
Here are my past flat heads. Sure do miss them as the where a blast to ride.
My 1946 U 74 I built out of pieces that has been in 14 shows won 22 awards been in 3 magazines and one news paper. Been rode on 1800 mile trips and a daily runner for many years.
A foot clutch could be either a rocker clutch or a suicide clutch which do you have. Reason I say rocker clutch is you rock the pedal back and froth which is a foot clutch but so is a suicide. But what ever works.
My old 38 Knuckle (with jockey/suicide) tried on several occasions to launch me into a busy intersections but at idle it would only lurch ahead a couple feet & die. Not so bad on the flat but on a hill it got dicey.. especially trying to start it again... ah the good old days.. put hair on your chest.
