Default sub-domain URLs not working & URL shorteners

Two technical questions;

sub-domain URLs do not seem to working, e.g.

links to

en.wikipedia.org

CHiPs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

break and include that weird invisible question mark box, whereas links to

http://wikipedia.org/wiki/CHiPs

won't.

Secondly, why are URL shorteners like bitly and googl banned? They're useful to shorten long URLs that otherwise break.

Thanks

An ordinary domain name is like:
example.com
A sub-domain is like
english.example.com
german.example.com
french.example.com
where each of the domain names is a separate website, usually according to language, state or, perhaps, department.

When you make a link to a website address that is written as a sub-domain, it does not work on this forum and in addition, it makes that funny box with a question mark in it. It's a configuration problem.

Try it,
HTML Code:
[url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sons_of_Anarchy]Sons of Anarchy[/url]
[url=http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Sons_of_Anarchy]Sons of Anarchy[/url]
Makes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sons_of_Anarchy

instead of

Sons of Anarchy
The second question relates to web address shortening codes. There are a number of websites which shorten web addresses to make them easier to use

For example:
    They are useful is you want to copy in a very long website address which often break or become unclickable.

    For some reason, the forum is set up to censor them and break the list so they cannot be used.

    I wondered why?

    the forum wants you to stay here on it and possibly buy something from one of it's sponsors. they have no chance to sell you anything when you are off looking at other things. this forum is free to use, and they are not going to have people sending other users link that will take them away from the forum.

    Using domain shorteners is useful, for example, when linking to a page of an online book with specific technical references.

    It's not about sending people to non-advertisers. After all, one could just use the proper address of a non-advertiser, so why censor bitly and googl and so on?

    Some URL with certain characters break forum linking because it does not understand them. In such cases, a domain shortener can fix it.

    As to the sub-domain issue, it remains as above making a strange box in the line.
