warped rotors will cause a sensation in the steering. they would have to be way out to cause pulsation due to the fact that the pads are riding on the surface, but the first mentioned would be very noticeable.
pulsation is caused by friction coefficient diff on the rotor surface. pads slide nicely over the hard sport and grab on the softer spots. this will be very noticeable in the lever. what to look for is shinny or discoloration areas on the rotor surface. if so, must replace them. this type of defect happens in all metals.

Make sure both pistons in caliper are moving freely also.
if one piston is sticking it can result in pulsation in lever

The spongy feeling tells me you have air or moisture in your fluid which can cause your brakes to pulsate.
Change out the fluid first and see if that fixes the problem.
