Default Steel Braided Brake Cable Install

I'm considering asking Santa to bring me some nice steel braided brake cables for Christmas this year. Before I ask for them, I was wondering how hard they are to change out? I plan on doing front and rear and it doesn't look all that hard but I want to be sure I can do it myself. Can someone tell me what the process is to do it? Do the brakes need to be bled? Any gotcha's that I should know about? I checked for instructions in the DIY area of the site but couldn't find anything on replacing brake cables. Any input would be a huge help! Thanks!

its really not a problem, you should try to find a shop that sells the lines and get part numbers of everything you need, some of the fittings may need to be 90 degree and some may need to be a different angle. when your done they will need to be bled. good luck!

When you change the lines you have to remove all of the fluid. You will have to bleed the system throughly after you change the lines. All air has to be out of the system.

DO NOT USE THE OLD FLUID

Make sure you use the correct fluid type that was in the system.

I have done this lots of times before. You have to drain the fluid from the lines. Then it is just a matter of changing them out. Bleeding is the most important thing to do. Before you bleed them be sure to check all the lines to make sure that the fitings are all tight. It is real easy to do the job. I also suggest to go to HDBikeparts.com. They sell cables a lot cheaper and if you say what kind of bike you have and what mods you did to the bike then they will send the right stuff. Fittings and all. Myself and a few friends use that online store a lot. I happen to be the local wrench in my neighborhood and have found that website to be real good.

Cover anything on the bike that could possible get brake fluid spilled on it, it will eat into the finish. I've used tin foil in the past as it's easy to shape to cover almost any part.
