This may be a silly question, but is it safe to plug a rear tire, with less than 200 miles on it? I got a nail Friday from all the debris hee in New Orleans, and was wondering if it would be safe to plug it. I know, I know...."would YOU ride a scoot with a plugged tire..."?
I guess I will have to bring it to the dealer to remove and patch from the inside, or just buy a new tire?
I got a nail in my rear tire a few weeks ago. I call all the local dealers none would plug it or repair it with a patch. new tire was only option. Luckly I figured out my had tubes and was able to get a new tube. $45.00 total.
Plugging a tire is ok when your on 4 wheels inside a safety cage, but if you got a hole in your tire on a motorcycle, you REPLACE it. Tube or not. Its a serious safety hazard. Is your life or that of loved ones riding 2up with you worth the cost of a new tire?
If your life is only worth $155, then by all means patch and tube it, myself, I wouldn't ride on a patched tire if you paid me. There's only 2 wheels on these scoots last time I looked and when one goes away, unless you can unicycle it, guess where you're going.
No dealer will patch a tire for insurance, not to mention safety issues.Unless your broke, crazy or in the middle of nowhere, which you aren't,replace it,dont think twice,Bob
This question has been asked a few times on different threads lately, so I did a little research on the subject. The following is HD's official stand on the issue:
Tubeless tires may be repaired in the tread area only, and then the puncture must be 1/4" or less. A tire with less that 1/16" tread depth cannot be repaired. All repairs must be made from inside the tire. Acceptable methods of repair include a patch and plug combination, chemical or hot vulcanizing patches or head-type plugs.
Inner tubes should only be patched as an emergency measure. Replace the damaged tube as soon as possible. Tubes can be used in tubeless tires.
