Replace my Dunplops last year with Metzeler. The rear seemed a bit narrower but used it anyway. Tire change time again. I want as fat as possible without Mod's. Contat Metz, they say to use the guide and send me one.
Bike came with: D401 160/70B17 73V
I used a Metz last time: 160 / 70 R17 73V
The Metz guide says: 160/70B 73H TL ME880 D spec
It doesn't appear to me that this is going t get me any more "meat" on that rear tire. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I sruck with a skinnier Metz than the Dunflop was?
To go any wider than the 160, you will need a new wider rim. Check the guide as advised, and cross ref or google for the exact sizes. I installed the Metz, and it is wider. It could be an optical illusion because of the design of the tire and tread.
The Brazilian Metzelers have been running narrower than the old German made. Buddy of mine with a Street Bob has been running the Avon AV 56 Storm 160/70-17 and has been very happy with them.

I was told as well that the new Metzelers run narrower than the old one's. Will an Avon on the rear run OK with the Metzeler on the front? Now to find an Avon dealer here in Canada! lol

Sorry it took me so long to reply, my phone line was down for a few days. AT&T really sucks.
I ran an Avon Venom on the rear of my FXR with an ME880 on the front for about 5,000 miles and had zero problems. Put a Venom on the front not long ago. I am liking the Avons better than the Metzelers, even the ones that were German made. The first Brazilian rear tire was only on the bike for about 100 miles. Sold it to a friend who didn't mind that it was taller and narrower. It was an improvement over his Dunlop. The Avons seem to wear a little slower and the handling is comparable. All my tires come from the internet.
