Hey All,
Own an '02 Road King Classic, 25K on the clock. Lately I've noticed I'm feeling every bump, rut, crack in the road, and feeling them hard. Also, and this worries me, the rear end feels a little mushy on turns. Almost like riding on tar patches. Checked tire pressures and they are right there in the 35- to 38 psi range. Any help in a diagnosis would be appreciated. Thanks.
Could be caused by lots of things. Check all the fastners carefully for proper torque. I've heard of axles wearing from not getting greased properly during a tire change. Put the bike on a lift and start shaking things until you find something loose.
Check the air pressure in the shocks, and the forks. Harley dropped the air forks on later models, but yours might have them. The fitting is at the right rear of the bike behind the saddlebag, at the rear saddlebag mount. I run 15psi front and rear running 2 up, you could probably get by with 8 to 10 one up. Harley offers a pump made just for airing the suspension.
Have you replaced the fork oil? Think 20k is the mark for that, now that you got a few miles on her. going to a thicker fork oil will restore the front ride.
Rear most likely shocks but check for any play in rear swing arm.
