I know that the previous owner had the stage one reflash of the ecu done when he put on the heavy breather intake and the screamin eagle slipons. Now the bike has short shots. But the pinging has happened with both setups. Do you think this would help? http://www.dkcustomproducts.com/ViED...DK-VIED-NR.htm
Thanks
Yes it will. I got FL-XIEDs from DK for my pipes and air cleaner setup and it works perfectly. Call them to make sure you get the right one.
Ok, while I agree with everyone that to be optimal you need a tuner, what you're experiencing is not all bad. Because of the EPA, our bike run the ideal AFR of 14.7:1. That's the source of your problem. You're so lean at all times, even with the Stage 1 download, that when you romp on the throttle it takes time for the ECU to catch up to demand and pump more gas to the cylinders. Therefore, you get pinging for a few seconds until it does catch up. Once it's caught up to the demand, the pinging stops.
Do this as a test. Cruise at 50MPH in 5th gear. That should have you in the low 2000's for RPM. Slam the throttle to wide open, I guarantee you it will ping.
Now, set back to 50MPH in 5th. Slowly roll the throttle to wide open. Obviously, do this on the highway. Do not shift to 6th. You most likely won't get any pinging doing this, or very little initially.
Now, as a third test. Set to 50MPH in 4th. That should put you around 2800-3000RPM. Bang it to WOT again. You'll get much less pinging because the fuel demand is already pretty high. Shift to 5th around 70MPH and level out.
f you hear pinging at full throttle then don't give it full throttle until you've got it sorted out. Be careful not to lug the engine until you have it tuned. If it still pings you can restrict a bit of the flow into the intake with some duct tape around the air filter. This will simulate the reduced airflow of the stock intake until you get it tuned properly, eliminating the need to remove the entire intake kit.

Hey everyone, I have a 09 fat bob with the stage 1 setup from harley. Recently I installed some vance and hines short shorts with the optional quiet baffles. In the previous setup and the current setup at wot in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, I swear I can hear some pinging. I am in Cali and I run our premium which is 91. Looking in to getting it dyno tuned down the road. Any thoughts? Mabe run some octane booster? For the time being? I'm new at all of this so any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rob.
My opinion on a ping issue is carbon build up in the combustion chamber, usually caused by tuners, lack of rpm use, a/f breathers putting crankcase vapors back into combustion chamber and corn gas. Pure gas will clean carbon away better then the corn gas. Run 4 oz of Chevron Techron synthetic injector cleaner thru a few tanks of fuel and the he.. out of it and it will likely clear up.

Cali 91 was the first time I noticed a difference. no pinging but different like it did not have the power? and it smelled out of exhaust as reported by bike following.
wot in 1st, 2nd and 3rd puts it into a higher load range. Now take it with a grain a salt as no one has been able to prove, I was told that the dealer flash canned map is the same as the base map available with the SEPST tuner. If that is true I can tell you that these base maps are not tuned much outside of normal shifting as recommended in the owners manual. It is no surprise you get pinging going into that leaner load range.
carbon buildup, timing and lean AFR. exhaust leak & octane. any one or more contribute to pinging
