I've bought a Sears M/C lift, ordered the service manual, already have a 3/8" & 1/4" Craftsman socket set and some misc screwdrives and box-end wrenches. Now, what else will I need to do service interval mainenance checks & oil changes? I do not intend to remove my wheels/tires when I need new ones nor am I going to do a engine re-build at home, so I'm not looking to buy tools for those jobs. Specifically, which type of torque wrench/oil filter wrench/torx drivers/allen wrenches, etc....do I need to buy. I'm just looking to purchase the correct items without wasting my time and money. I'm also partial to Craftsman tools but will buy whatever you experienced "wrenchers" have found to work best.
Sears has a 1/2 drive Ft Lb. torque wrench and a 3/8 drive Inch Lb torque wrench for about 60.00 each. I have, and recommend one of each. If you are going to change brake pads, you will need a 10mm 12 point socket.
You'll need a set of torx bits, and some allens. I got a strap type oil filter wrench from the HD shop. It uses a 3/8 drive ratchet and extension to turn, and it is easy to get by the electrical plug that is right in front of filter.
I've looked at both those torque wrenches at Sear and have noted different range ratings (ft lbs ?) for each. I'm not sure if I'm asking this right but, how low should the starting value be or...what range will be most useful for the bike's maintenance requirements?
I was also told to buy the offset box end allen wrenches......good advice or not?
Your torque wrench needs to go into inch/lbs...they sell one at Sears.
You will also need a Torx set...make sure you get one that has T27, they are hard to find, so be sure to look at what you are buying. Offset Alen wrenches...not sure what that is, I have the socket type that I can use with my torque wrenches as well as the box ended ones.
Thanks for the info Mac. I've seen a picture of an offset allen wrench - the long end is shaped at the tip so as it can be used at an angle and not directly out @ 90 degrees from the head of the allen screw.
The torque wrenches have a scale for metric and American marked on them. The 1/2 drive will be in Ft. Lbs. from 20 to somewhere around 150. The 3/8 drive will be in inch lbs. There is a conversion chart with the wrenches so you can convert the inch lb wrench to ft pounds, and the 3/8 drive inch pound wrench goes up to about 20 ft lbs. when the conversion is done. If you get both wrenches you can go from 10 inch lbs to 20 ft lbs with the small wrench, and then go from 20 ft lbs. to 150 ft. lbs with the big wrench.
These two wrenches will give you all the settings you need for everything HD. To do everything you are going to do, you really need both wrenches.
I know what kind of allen wrenches you are talking about, and I have used them at work. They work well, and might be useful, though not necessary to do what you need to do.
I have searched thru the DIY topics on this site and others at the V-twin site. I've read recommendations from just one torque wrench to as many as four, from "get a M/C lift" to "you don't need one", etc, etc,.... Most of the posts I've read (but not all) just say "get a torque wench/torx set/allen wrenches/etc...." I just wanted to get the input from experienced "wrenches" as to the TYPES/SIZES/RATINGS of the tools I'll be needing for routine service intervals and that's what you folks have either been confirming or giving me. I would dispose of anything that had a torx head and replace with allen heads,chrome steel.Namely the primary cover and the inspection cover .They look better and are easier to work with.Ive done this on both my bikes after ruining the torx heads .Get only the best tools ..Ive obtained all mine through Sears sales .Somewhere you will need a 10mm wrench,cant remember for which area though.
