My wife is 5'4" and she fits very nicely on her Honda Shadow 600. You could probably find a used one for around $2000, ride it for a summer to get comfortable, and sell it the next spring for almost what you paid for it.
I bought a 2007 Vulcan 500 for $800. It had been sitting for 4 years. Book value on the bike is $2200.00. If I drop the bike...it will still be worth the $1000 I have into it. Heck, I bet I could part it out and still get my $1000 back.

I'm almost ready to move up into a new bike (just started a radio show, so I'm watching the finances), but I'll be moving up to a Dyna Switchback come summer.

One of the women that I took the course with bought a Softail Slim before taking the class. After the class, she told me that every time she rode the bike, it was overshadowed by the thought "don't drop it - $18,000, don't drop it - $18,000".

This pretty much nails it. That said, and coming from someone who resembles your dimensions, I would go with either a Softail Deluxe or Fatboy Lo.

Moegirl, from a not-so-petite female I will echo the idea of starting with something small and lighter to build some time on. You don't say how much riding experience you have but going straight to a heavy, powerful bike isn't a good idea. Make your mistakes on something cheaper. Don't worry, you will still have some mistakes left to make when you get to a more expensive bike but hopefully they will be smaller ones.
Don't fall for it,girl. Perki WANTS you to spank him. As for the OP,I ride with a couple of petite gals, neither over 5' 1",110 pounds. They both ride Electra Glides. But both have over 20 years in the saddle behind them. Get what you like, but get the skill to handle it,first.

If you're dead set on a new Harley I'd look at one of the Street bikes. If not, look at a used Honda Rebel.

My wife 5'2" started on a 883 superlow, rode it for 4 yrs. Now she rides a Road glide. I really liked the superlow and would recommend it for a new rider. Very easy to ride but also is enough bike that you dont get tired of it real soon.

If you want a Harley , I would say a Sportster. If not , a Honda Rebel would be my other choice , both would be easier to handle than most bikes. JMO

My wife is 5'2' and 102 lbs. She rides a Super Glide Custom and she has dropped it clumsily a few times when she first got it but has been upright and outstanding ever since.
She even test rode a V-rod for a couple days and loved it...no fear.
She'll never sit on the back of a bike again...I kinda miss when she'd wrap her legs around my waist.
Get what ever bike makes you feel confident for your first one.
