I wouldn't want someone calling me. The problem is some people just don't know when to quit. Is he going to call me if something breaks next? Wonder where that scratch came from? Too many fruitloops these days.

Like a user said above, they traded vs selling themselves to avoid all that.

Respect their privacy imo.

Ethically? It would be a huge invasion of privacy to try and contact the previous owner. Personally, I think it would be more than a little creepy.

Contacting the shop to obtain the service records would probably not be a problem, other than... Seriously? Does it really matter that much to go out of your way to pester someone about what kind of oil was previously used? In the grand scheme of things... What does it matter? Put whatever kind of oil in it you prefer going forward and just ride it.

Would you call your girlfriend's ex...to ask him if he used a sexual lubricant and if so what brand? Seems like similar logic.

As for the tax break, you may want to check with your state. If you buy a bike ir car here in Mo. And sell yours outright, you have 90 days to send in a form for a refund of your tax differance. If you sell it before you buy, you can bring in the bil of sale and get it deducted at the license office. You dont have to trade it in for a tax break.

When I bought a used bike from a dealer I did ask for the orig. owners info. The dealer called the orig. owner to see if it was OK to give out his name and number. The orig. owner was happy to speak with me and because of his recommendation of the bike I bought it.

I don't think there's anything to be gained by calling the PO over what oil. You're gonna use what you're gonna use anyway. I don't see what difference it makes what's in it now... you already own the bike. It's not like you can return it to him, no matter what he used. The first thing I ever do on any vehicle is change all the fluids so I know what's in there and that it's fresh.

Now if you were to call to find out to see if he did any engine work, like cams or something, that would be different, IMO.

While you are at it, you should also find out where he put the gas cap while filling.

I had a dealer give out my info on a truck I traded in... Pissed me right off.. When I bought my RK the previous owner had bought it new from the same dealer. Had all the service records and everything. But I did have a few questions about some of the add-ons he put on the bike, so I asked the dealer if they would contact him for me to see if he would call me.. Fkr never did haha..

My answer is No because it is not worth the trouble. You did say it matters what type of oil used, but that's like borderline ADD, stalking, and whatever arrestable offense out there. If you are worried then change it with the oil you prefer. There is really no big difference on what type of lube you use as long it complies with HD
