So, I've many times heard my friends and even myself use terms like "girly bike" and such to refer to the lighter, smaller Sporty. Now that decades have passed and the 883 is more established and widely used by men, is it more accepted? I'm considering one in the summer because it's so much easier to get off the foot and hold up than its heavier big brothers. What's the word? How do folks now perceive men that choose an 883 as opposed to let's say, a 1200? Can't wait fer the responses.
I am sorta looking for one at a good price to play with. I dont care what others say, but around here very few girls on sporties. Mostly young guys and that's good to see.
All I know is, Sportsters are a helluva lotta fun. I dunno if more girls ride them than men, but I kinda doubt it. Honestly, when I see a woman on a Harley, it's almost always a Softail.

While I am a huge Sportster fan, they are not easier to "get off the foot and hold up". A Dyna is much better balanced with the weight lower. As far as perception, I would say no, that hasn't changed. I would also say F'em if you want one. That iron is an awesome looking bike and if you get bored with the lack of power, it is a screamer (for a Harley) with a 1200 kit...
I'm Olde School,,
Entry level, Women's Bike.
The only ones that will give you grief are those that ride the heavier big brother bikes.
If you want to get one,, get one,, many of us started (entry level) with a sporty,, took the **** and therefore hand it out now that we have big brother bikes,,
Sorry, but it's part of the turf
My 6'5" 250 son (muscle not fat) selected a 883 R in 2003. No one ever considered saying a word to him about the bike's size! He did just fine with it until a gray hair in a new Buick Park Avenue turned left in front of him. Totaled the bike but he was not hurt.
Now he has a Street Bob.
I have a XR1200 and a XL1200T. Two of the best bikes that I ever had.

I don't typically care what people think most of the time either, but one of the reasons I'm getting one to begin with is to get outta the house and meet more people that have the same interests... Don't wanna start that out by being the ONE who rolls up and gets looked at weird. Kinda defeats the purpose but just judging from the first few replies, it sounds like that stigma may be a thing of the past. Don't know if the region affects anything either... I'm FROM North Carolina in the Appalachians, but in San Diego, it may be different. Don't know.

You I believe are in the minority from what I have experienced. The only people that have called my bike a girls bike are people who don't ride. I have yet to hear it from someone that actually owns a harley. This however is just my experience.
