I got one of these little buggers and the thing works pretty well. VERY bright LED's and is fairly accurate to give you a good idea of you charge going to your battery.
obviously if you hook it directly to the battery it will stay on all the time. were would be the easiest place to hook up the positive and negative wires so it only comes on when the bike is on.
I've had one for about five years and it works pretty well. Bought it after being stranded with a dead battery one time.
Don't know what kind of bike you have but if it's a touring model, there is an accessory plug under the seat on some years that has three contacts and a ground. One of those contacts is "hot" when the ignition is turned on.
Otherwise, tap on to a wire on a light circuit....lights are on when ignition is on.

1999 sportster 1200
and I can turn my headlight off with a toggle switch. so I can splice it into the running tail light than? wouldn't splicing it into the lights show the power gin to the light and not the power going to that battery?
Keep in mind I am bad at electrical work but am not afraid to try/learn as I go with anything.
