2012 Fat Bob. I had not been able to ride for about a month and when I started the engine gas leaked from the quick disconnect. As I understand, the "usual" culprit is the 1st O-Ring Seal found in the female connector that is attached to the gas tank. I tried to pick the o-ring without luck. I see that the female quick disconnect looks threaded into the gas tank, but I am not sure. It does have a hex head. I tried to pick the seal with the tank half full but every time I tried to pick the seal, gas came down.
Assuming I remove most of the gas, is the quick disconnect female difficult to remove ? Of course it can be unscrewed, but I wonder if it is connected to something else inside the gas tank and if I removed it I would then get into more trouble. I was planning on removing the quick disconnect female connector and work the seal out with a bit more space on my work table.
Had the same problem with an '08 Heritage. I took it to an Indy Mechanic. It was a real pain to fix. He had gas all over himself, the floor, the bike. I had to leave for a bit, it took him about 3 hours...and he said it was not fun! He had to replace the entire quick connect fitting. Good luck.
If your 2012 is the same as my 09 it can be done without the special tool. You need to go in through the top of the tank to replace it. Be careful not to damage anything and cover the tank with a towel. Wasn't too difficult of a job.
