Keep in mind that your motor is tuned for the way it currently breathes, in AND out! If you change something you could be throwing that tune out of whack. I say break the EPA shackles, do a complete stage 1 upgrade and set your motor free!

I plan on doing the stage 1 but can't afford it all at once yet so I figured if I could I'd get the pipes first and at least make it sound like a motorcycle.

What I am doing is slip ons on my RoadKing. What I am learning is that for the touring models is that the full systems is generally a 2 piece deal anyways. For example you have many options for head pipes, and you can use what ever slip ons you want. So unlike my Sportster where I bought a full system I can by this one in pieces.

My mechanic told me it wouldn't be a big deal to run without one, but Frank at Drago said otherwise. Since I am going with his pipes, gonna go with his advice.

You are getting some good and some bad advice here. First question, how much louder do you want to go. If you plan to take long trips, you might want to go not too loud or your ears will be ringing (you can always wear ear plugs, not for me). I've done it all over 41 years and don't need loud pipes to impress anyone. However to answer your question, if you change the complete exhaust, you definitely will need a fuel adjustment device. If you change the air cleaner alone, maybe. If you change just the slipons, no. If you change a/c and slipons but leave headers alone, maybe or you can get a download from the mothership (this is commonly called a stage 1). Stage 1 plus cams is generally called a stage 2. Stage 2 with SE parts can be dealt with a stage 2 download from MoCo. You can overcompensate always with going directly to a fuel tuner and a dyno (only takes money) Lastly, to make it even more confusing, some exhaust companies have their own fuel management devices and can download canned maps to your ecm based on their exhaust/your ac combo like vance and hines with their fuelpak. This saves you the expense of a dyno and will get you 90-95% of the way there.

Yea I am not looking for obnoxious loud, but louder and deeper. I ride a lot and a lot of long mile days, hence the upgrade, so the last thing I want is to wear ear plugs or have a headache all day. Thanks for the intel.

No problem, I ride the same way. Try listening to some 4" Rinehart slipons, they don't sound too bad with a 103 and have a nice deep rumble and you can hear your stereo as well.

To save some cash get your exhaust and one of these:

http://sales.nightrider.com/XiED-Fue...ement_c_1.html

They are plug and play and only takes a minute to install. This way you can wait on stage 1 and get amazing performance.

And its not spot yet.Find a good tuner not just someone with a dyno and get it tuned,Canned maps are nothing but a guess.

I've experimented in stages and to cut a long story short, you're eventually going to go the full mile.I first replaced the slip ons with the one pipe I just love till today, CFRs!! but it wasn't as 'solid' sounding as i thought but you don't need any kinda tuning at this point. The minute you change the AC to something that breathes better, you're now going to have to give it the right amount of fuel and that's when stuffs like Supertuner and the likes come in.The next thing I did in one go was to change to the V&H power duals,AC and the Supertuner. That's when I got the true sound of the CFRs,the bike was running better and I was a happy camper.
