Default Fatboy rims

When I bought my Heritage it already had fatboy rims on it.I've heard a lot about the solid rims and wind.On windy days it seems to throw me all over the road.Anybody out there had solid rims and switched to spokes and had a different experience? Or even the other way around? I love the solid rims but will switch to spokes to get away from the shitty ride if I have to...

Sounds like you are over correcting for the wind. Once you improve your riding technique, the problems will go away.

I ride a Fatboy w/ 16" apes.

I've had all kinds of different wheels and don't feel a difference with the solid rims. Think about it, if the solid wheels on a Fat Boy were adversely affected by side winds, bikes with fairings & tour packs would be too.

Just got a Fatboy last year. I do notice a slight difference with the wheels, but VERY, VERY MINOR.

Not enough to concern myself with changing.

Due to issues with spokes and a ruined hub I put a Fatboy solid disk wheel on the rear of my Road King. No difference.

Default overcorrecting

I've been riding for about 40 years and have had every kind of bike imagineable."all over the road" may have been a bit of an exaggeratrion.Just seems the wind tries to throw me around on this bike and I'm trying to figure out why

I switched to spoke on my 05 Fat Boy. Really haven't noticed a difference Maybe a slight one when in a bad cross wind, but it's negligible. I like the look of the spokes better which is why I made the switch.

Default Thanks

Thanks for all the input from everyone.Maybe it's just an extra windy year or maybe after hearing some of the hype I'm just noticing the effect of the wind more.I'll keep the solid rims on for now I guess

My neighbor 2 doors down is a mechanical engineer and he rides a Vrod with solid wheels. He says that if you put a spoked bike on a dyno and get it up to 35 mph and higher that spokes are no different than solid wheels. He said to take a garden hose and try spraying water thru the spokes at 35 mph. Same as air, the water won't make thru the spokes. He seems like a pretty smart guy.....I believe him. And no, I can't tell any difference on my Fatboy in a crosswind.
