Default DIY Powder Coating

I want to introduce myself, I write for a a DIY powder coating site. I have been powder coating for several years now and I just made the site to make it easier for other new powder coaters to get started.

I started powder coating parts for my car restorations and the results have been amazing. My stuff looks 10x better because everything is powder coated.

Anyways, if anyone else here is interested in powder coating or already is into powder coating, you might want to check the site out. Powder Coating: The Complete Guide

I just finished an article on How to build your own powder coating oven.

Also, feel free to ask me any powder coating questions, I would be happy to answer them.

Here's a tank I did that came out pretty unique. Its bare brushed steel with 2 layers of clear powder coat.

I have a question. Do you have to use a special blend for the fuel tanks so it's gasoline proof ?

There is no need for a special blend. Powder coating is inherently very chemical resistant. Epoxy powders are often the best in this area but they break down from UV so they would be a poor choice for a gas tank. Super durable powders also have a better resistance to chemicals but they are only offered in a handful of colors.

Any properly cured powder should last a long time on a gas tank regardless of the occasional gas spill.

You can powder coat over chrome as long as the chrome is in good condition and is not failing. It is common to powder coat over chrome with transparent candy colors and the chrome base is what gives it that candy look. However, when doing this, the powder coating will be more susceptible to chipping and peeling because the chrome is a very smooth surface and the powder has nothing to bite into.

An alternative is to lightly blast the chrome, this will give the powder something to bite into. When doing this, you are only trying to add some profile to the chrome, not remove it. So lower your air pressure or increase the distance from your part when blasting.

The reason why some say not to powder coat over chrome is because the powder will be at the mercy of the chrome. If the chrome starts flaking, the powder is going with it. As long as it is good quality chrome, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

The alternative is stripping the chrome which can be done at your local chrome plating shop usually. Although it is not cheap.

This is what it looks like over chrome, using an eastwood gun and home oven. These stayed great, the front of the teardrop air cleaner got dinged up pretty fast.
