I usually ride the speed limit or a tad over, so I never get goose to riding near anyone, since they're going 10-15mph over. And I really don't like riding with anyone anyway.

I'd get irritated fast if someone I don't know tried to share my lane. Even at a stop light. Staggered back. If he's on your *** move to the right and signal them to pass.

My friends that I ride with generally like the use of the whole lane. So we always ride staggered or in single file.

The only time I share a lane with another bike is at a red light with someone I know, other than that I ride staggered. If I don't know the person in front of me then I'll hang back a little further than usual.

I'll move to the left of the lane so you can see past me and I have no problem if you fall in staggered to the right behind me, but that's definitely not an invitation to ride next to me or to pass me in the same lane.

No, it's not an invite to ride beside him as many have already said,,
Ride behind him in the same lane position or staggered.
DO NOT Blind spot the front bike!
If you ride in the right side of the lane (staggered) keep in a position so you can see the riders face in his mirror.
If you can see his face he can see you,, stay where he can see you.

I wouldn't want some stranger riding by me like that so I'm certainly not going to do it to them either.

No. He was probably prompting you to ride staggered. I never ride abreast. Too many deer.

In my experience, this usually happens when the trailing bike is traveling faster than the leading bike, and there is no way or nowhere to pass. If someone comes up behind me looking to pass, and I'm the lone slow moving vehicle on a light traffic road, I'll generally slide right and let them by. If another bike comes up behind me, and passing isn't an option (city traffic on a double striped two-lane), I'll move to the center of the lane so not to encourage him to pass in-lane or pull alongside. If he moves to the right rut, I'll slide left to let him stagger up if he wants, and have better visibility. But I expect him to hang back at least as much as a in group ride. If he does, then fine. At a stop light, no problem with him pulling up closer. However, off the light, he should defer to me. If he gets too close, then I'll slow down. They generally get the message. If I sense I have a squid or an @sshole on the other bike, I move to right side of the lane, slow down to force him to the left and let him pass.

If on the freeway, I don't mind if they stagger up, but hang back slightly. I'm not going to consider him, however, as I negotiate traffic, change lanes, etc.

If I come up behind someone, I always hang back a reasonable distance and in the opposite wheel rut, until I find a safe place to pass. I don't pass on double yellows, or in the same lane.
