Can a 2001 Dyna still be reliabile??? Anything to look for???
Hey everyone,
I'm going to look at a 2001 wide glide today with 18k miles on it. Is there anything in particular I need to be worried about? I would think cam shoes should still be good for a long while? Would y'all think with a fresh service/tires that it would be a "road worthy" bike given there's nothing out of the norm with it? I was hoping to ride it to Sturgis this year?(about 2500 mile round trip).
I have an 04 low rider with 15000 and it's as reliable as the day it was made. Oils and tires and it should have many trouble free miles left in it. mabey check the cam shoes this winter. Good luck hope it works out for you and post a pic if you get it !
I put a lot of hard miles on my 05. I wouldn't be worried about an 01.
Ride it a lot before heading to Sturgis to shake it down and bring any issues out.
That doesn't mean to ride it locally. Once you determine it is running well, take it for some 200 mile afternoons. You will learn if the bike needs anything.
And, you will learn what it takes to be comfortable on it for a long trip.

Recently sold my '01 FXD and sometimes find myself wishing I hadn't. Good solid bikes. 24K on the bike and the tensioners had barley begun to wear
Older bikes have run for many miles, depends on the amount of care and attention is given to them.
Do it yourself, or find a reliable shop and they run for a long time.
My '89 has 76K on it with about 30k in a bit more than 4 season's use on my part.
Different engine type, but I wouldn't hesitate to rid it cross country even now.
If it has been cared for, freshen everything up and ride it.
I think there's less to go wrong with the older ones then the newer bikes..01 was a good year other then the cam shoes that bike will go forever. ..when the money's there do the cam shoes and inner bearings
Thanks guys. It was a 1 owner carb'd bike. He had every receipt and new tires on it. We made a deal for it. I should have it Tuesday or Wednesday. Thanks!
