Cowboy Boots, you ain't from around here are ya boy? We call the boots, round toe, square toe, ropers, rough stock, or riding heel. Wear what you like. I won't say leather is slick, but I will say it doesn't grip. I wear Justin, Ariat, and Tony Lama steel toes at work, only my dress boots have leather soles.
... and don't forget the "spur ledge" .... I wear Ariat's with the Vibram sole and in-sole that is replaceable ... They cost a little more but they do so much more ( sounds like a commercial )

I wear a pair of Ariats with rubber soles, they have been fine but I just got them this spring. I try to put my foot down, not push to the side. Right foot on brake, left foot hits the ground the moment the bike stops. I have never had any drama.
Been wearing boots for years. No slip. Ever.
Not sure what people are talking about...
Leather sole, rubber sole... whatever. I have 10 pairs at least.
I use only a toe shifter and some boots will get a scuff on that spot.
However, I notice my really nice skins (i.e. gator and hippo) both hold up better than the leather.
I was nervous I would ruin the "nice" ones, but come to find out they are tougher !
Dan Post makes a pair that I have, they have leather soles with rubber on them, and they are water proof. Great riding boots, I have them in black, brother in law has them in brown.
Thanks for all the replies. Just tired of the redwing firefighter boots they're great, but like I said, tired of wearing my duty boots. $ is a matter, was just wondering if I really had to search through the numerous boots in my price range that didn't have leather soles. Sounds like I don't as long as I mind foot placement.
Been wearing leather soled ropers for years. They're a little slick on the pavement at times but I've never been down because of them. They've been resoled 3 times and always with leather. Had that same pair of boots since '97.
Check out Sierra trading post. I got a pair of justin ropers for $65. They have a ton of boots and sometimes have really good prices. Along with the ropers I have a pair of Justin waterproof workboots. They both have walking heels and rubber/vibram soles.
You can also check out eBay and local craigslist for new boots. I found a new pair of Chippewa engineer boots with tags in a box for $75 on Craigslist. Look around you'll be surprised. Also I'm not sure where you live but I've found the leather soles don't do real well in the rain or in snow and ice.
I took my boots to the local cobbler and he replaced the leather sole for vibram $40.00 for both boots, also the taller boot keeps the heat off the inner left calf.
