Welcome to harley's main stream oversea's marketing campaign and yes it is designed to force you into buying from a local to you dealership , that pesky tax and profits thing. Only way around it is have buddies in the US do the buying and ship it to you.
Oh, after reading several times I get what your talking about. The 1984 part threw me,, it's actually a 21st century marketing ploy.
Harleys web site doesn't offer a very good "common parts" section,, it's all about selling upgrades and accessories.
So,, what I do,, is use Ronnies micro-fiche parts list with the blow apart diagrams and parts list,, http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.....asp?make=hdmc
When I find the part# I need,, I can punch that number into the "search" feature of the HD site,, some parts come up - some don't,, the web site is designed to send you to a local dealer for parts. Bookmark and Use Ronnie's.
Perhaps a user error? I'm in Japan and I can view their site for any location I want. Yeah it always defaults to Japanese, but they do have this nifty "switch countries" drop down menu at the bottom.
From the Australian website, it should look like this:
Once on the American website, hit the "Shop" tab:
Finally, click "For the bike" and you can view any part they offer. I doubt they'll let you shop from your IP, tho. You'd need a VPN to hide your location, but even then, you won't be able to have them send it to your address. They want you to shop for all your Harley needs locally...

Hey man thanks for the post it helped a lot to find the online part shop thanks for taking the time to make a tutorial really appreciate it.
Unfortunately it's cheaper for me to buy from the dealership than for me to pay for the freight handling and shipping costs.
I've always found Harley's web site slow and burdened with crappy navigation. Most folks visit the site for bikes and parts. The "Parts" link shouldn't be hidden behind a link called "Shop".
