I've got 3 yr old black V&H big radius pipes for my 2010 Nightster ... last summer 2 of the metal clips on the inside of the rear heat shield broke. Basically their welds broke completely, one clip totally gone, the other barely holding on.
Called them up, explained it and 2 raw clips were mailed out to me. Had to re-weld and of course, sand the outside and re-paint (bitch of a process, whatever).
This year, 3 clips on the other shield (front) broke. Called them up was told it was against their policy to send me those parts. Their concern was that people do a poor job welding them on and the pipe flies off and through someone's windshield and now V&H is in trouble ... yet their own weld clearly suck.
Since I'm out of their 1 yr warranty period, they told me I could buy a new heat shield (> $200).
SHAME ON YOU VANCE & HINES firstly for your poor quality weld job and also for your customer service. Trying to tell me that the reason for the weld braking is due to "dealer's over tightening the hose clamp". You can keep your product and your BS explanations as well.
Let's see, they honored the one year warranty on THREE year old pipes, and you're bitching because they wouldn't it after four years? IDK Man, I'd be pretty happy about them taking care of you 2 years out of warranty. Unless there's an inherent problem with those pipes, they didn't have to do that. Have you checked around to see if lots of other people have had the same problem/s?
Frankly, it sounds like you're being kind of dramatic, though.

Yeah ok ... it's a small piece of raw metal, which I'm willing to buy from them. If it happened once to 1 clip, I'd say "**** luck for me". But to have a total of 5 of potentially 7 clips bust in the exact same spot & way ... I'd consider that an "inherent problem with the pipes", don't you think?
Their main reason for not sending out the part is they're worried I'd do a shitty weld job when their own welding can't hold up ... come on, that's just icing on the cake.
Dramatic ... call me what you want but I'd love to see you fork over > $200
for a new heat shield in this case without being pissed at their response.
Well why don't you just use that noggin of yours and come up with a better way to attach them, or at least a stronger tab to weld on? When old **** breaks you have a choice: buy new or fix the old better.

I sometimes wonder why everybody believes that V&H is the schizz-nitz in the Harley Davidson exhaust market and that V&H is the only exhaust that will make their bike sound 'cool' . There are other companies out there in the world that produce a superior product to what V&H puts out but because the MoCo pushes that line, everybody buys into their hype then bitches about the less than ideal quality whether it's after a few months or a few years.
Too bad that that has happened. Have friends that use V&h and so far, no problem. Still runningf the stock exhaust system on my '88 Heritage and absolutely no problems. Sometimes stock might be better.
