When other brands are selling bikes as fast as they can build them Harley needs to look at the lineup. You can only go so many decades building the same bikes before people loose interest and buy another brand. Triumph just updated the entire Classic line to the according to Harley folks the dreaded liquid cooling, I bet they sell every one they build and have a waiting list. Where is the Harley Scrambler XL? It would be so easy for them to build what all the custom builders are doing with XL's anyway.
Harley's issue is internal not market. The dealer in Manhattan sold 78 Ducati Scramblers in 6 months.
If Harley cut their production they would be selling them as fast as they can make them as well. I don't think that's a good comparison. As far as I can tell Triumph makes ~50000 or so bikes in a year. Harley makes 270,000ish. So Triumph is a success but Harley is failing? I don't get the logic here. Harley has its problems but its still selling a ton of bikes.
I was having service done to my Deuce on Tuesday. While I was waiting my local dealer received a total of 9 bikes from HD on the big HD 18Wheeler. Of the 9 bikes, 8 where baggers. One of the employees told me that they sell many more baggers than smaller/stripped bikes. I asked how business was, and he told me business was good and that they had sold 5 bikes on the preceding rainy Saturday.

My point is not production numbers. My point is you can only sell the same bike to the same person so many times. So actually it is a good comparison in the actual market. Harley's lineup is stale and until they change that the crappy dealers will continue to close the doors. The bikes don't sell them selves anymore. There are much more exciting bikes out there.
I think the problem is deeper than cheap oil, o'bummer's economic forecasts/logic is all smoke and mirrors. People are still losing their homes but the cost of living is static? (No COL increase for SS recipients). His medical program is bankrupting many families. Here in Tucson a 100 year old copper mine just closed it's doors - 2500 out of work! Yeah, I see plenty of Mercedes, Beemers, Jags, Porsches, and high dollar trucks on the streets, but 90% of 'em are hangin' paper to drive 'em. When all the credit comes due, especially the govt's., this country is going to be in a world of hurt.
I was at a dealer yesterday and they had a leftover 15 copper Ultra Limited for $22000.00 ,oooooh! So tempting...
Won't get $hit for my 90000 miles 07 Flhtc .
They seemed to be doing ok but they were willing to deal on used inventory.
So maybe their solution will be to close a bunch of smaller franchises in lesser markets (like they did 6 years ago.) A few more distant mega-stores with 100 mile radius pulls replace them.
...too soon to tell; they haven't been open a month, and they're funded by some extremely DEEP pockets. More of a hobby than a business for Parsons, like the way he plays at NASCAR.
