I got caught in a heavy rainstorm the other night and without thinking I used my arm to wipe the windshield off at one point. The next day I discovered I put a pretty good scratch in it from the zipper on the sleeve of my leather. Pretty stupid huh!?!? Anyway, does anyone know of a product that will maybe remove scratches. I know meguires makes a product that is supposed to remove light scratches from paint, but will it harm a plastic windshield? Any help will be appreciated.
Phil
Try the Novus series available through J&P or any aftermarket.
The scratch will not disappear. I spent thirty years in the Exhibits business and had to fix many a scratch in acrylic. Polycarbonate (Lexan) may not clean as well, but through a series for abrasives to a fine polish, you can make good cosmetic improvement.
Don't forget replacement aftermarket screens are not that expensive.
You can go to your local small airport and ask them about MicroMesh Aircraft Window Restorer kits..A kit is a series of ever finer abrasive cloths, from 1500 grit to 12000 grit. You start with the coarsest grit and then keep polishing with the finer grits. After the 12000 grit, you use an anti-static cream that is in the kit to remove the microscopic dust particles. These kits are used to repair scratched airplane canopies and windows. I think I paid about $35 for mine many years ago, and it has paid for itself many times over in repairing scratched plastic. Here's a web site with a description, probably not the cheapest price though:
I use the novus stuff (you can get it in two different grits). I wipe a bunch on with a rag,let it dry and then buff it out with a Mothers mini powerball in the cordless drill. Works pretty good but doesnt get it bran-new again.
jc whitney has replacements that are made by Maier the company H-D uses and are half H-Ds price. also i got a new replacement Memphis shades that fits my RK for under a hundred on eBay and the bottom half is tinted blue and matchesmy Sinister Blue paint
