My uncle Cliff and my other uncle John were riding buddies. They were my heroes when I was a young boy. They were two tough cookies who loved to party and fight. You didn't mess with Uncle John especially. I swear, that man wasn't afraid of anyone. But both of them had hearts of gold. I idolized them when I was a boy. They rode all over the U.S. on their motorcycles. Daytona Bike Week was a trip they made every year from Ohio. Many trips all over the south, and a few out west. My uncle John raced flat track, and uncle Cliff, who was a professional mechanic by trade, was his tuner. I spent many weekends at the racetrack with them, running around getting them hotdogs, cleaning uncle John's faceshields, his number plate, etc. They made me feel "part of the race crew". Got to hang out with some greats. George Roeder, Bart Markel, Ronnie Rall, Dick Mann, Sammy Tanner, saw them all as a boy. Got my lifelong love of flat track from them. They were brother-in-laws by marriage, but never were two brothers closer. Sadly, they're both gone now, but I loved them very much.
