Are the jack stands part of the trailer or separate? Mine doesn't have them, so I just toss a set in the back that I had laying around. Not ideal, but works very well.
The jackstands on my 6x12 cargo trailer are welded to the side of the frame tubes. They fold-up underneath the trailer and have no effect on ground clearance. You should be able to buy a set at any good trailer parts store.

Mine are mounted on the bottom of the frame, so I lose about an inch & a half on the ground clearance. Has not been an issue but I am aware of it and act accordingly. You side mounts do sound like a better option.
