A floating rotor will "slide" laterally, independant of the hub to allow for "truer"(?) braking and less possiblity of pulsation.. Not very important to me. Havent seen them on cars..
The point behind a 4 piston caliper over a 2 piston is to avoid lock up with smoother application to a larger surface area while creating less heat. The 2 piston will lock easier because of the lesser surface area being "pinched".. Its more about control than "lockin-up".
I swapped out my single piston caliper on the front of my 96 Softail for a Thunderheart 4 piston. The stock master has no problems supplying the 4 piston caliper. The difference I noticed is the braking is much more controllable as far as pressure goes, feels more fine tuned. I like it alot, itlooks better and gives me more control while braking.
When you change from single disc to dual disc you also have to change the master. It is not a big deal.Just cover your front fender good in case you drop or spill something.
Went with Hawg Halters on both my '02 FLHTC and very soon on my '07 Standard with floating rotors , both times using the stock m/c , no problems www.hawghalters.com
I know this is getting technical, but what you need to consider is will your master cylinder supply what the 4/6 piston caliper needs to operate as advertized? I see this a lot with the Volvo tunning world, you can put porsche calipers on the 850 volvo, with some minor modifications, only problem is that the Volvo master cylinder doesn't have what it takes to really get the benifits of the change over. Most report a seat of the pants "ya it stops better". For the money and technology that the caliper has it should be backed by a master cylinder that can really make it work. Just something to think about.
Well, I guess a better way to ask my question would be:
What size master cyl is on '00 and newer bikes with 4 piston calipers??
It should say 5/8", or something of the sort, on the inside-switch side of the master. Anyone noticed??? I'm thinking they are the same size and want to make sure for all the reasons you guys are suggesting to match the master to the caliper.. Your absoloutly correct, they need to be matched.
Thanks guys,

The front brakes on my 03' SE-Deuce are are 4 piston....and twin disk. I am sure the master on that would do the job,....FWIW that bike came from the factory with stainless steel braided lines, and for whatever reason it always looks to me like the SS braided are a smaller overall O.D. then the stock/OEM rubber ones???? So if the OD is smaller on the ss lines then less fluid would be needed to operate the system at the correct PSI.....over thinking a bit here though.
If you PM me in the morning to remind me, I will pop the cover off and see if I can read the number inside the reservoir....or I could just look in my parts manual supplement and give you the exact Harley PN.....if you think that would help.
