Question Total Newbie

I've always wanted a Harley. Now that my husband is getting out of the Military and we will be settling down somewhere. I can finally have my Dream.

First things I need to do is figure out the type of Bike I want. HD is the only one I want.
I would like to get one where I can take it for long trips if I wanted to.
But not too bulky.

*I am a barely 5ft,3in Tall woman
So I am having to research seat height, obviously.

So any tips would be greatly appreciated.

When it comes time, I will be going for the New Riders Course. Is there anything else I should do?

Lot of choices to make. HD makes low seat height bikes and you can lower almost any of them via suspension/seats.

Best thing I could recommend is to visit your local dealer and sit on them all. I'd check the web site and look at the seat height on the ones you like. Street 500 might be a good start, or a Sporty, or maybe the dealer will have some used ones that have already been modified.

It's an exciting time, enjoy it.

I'm one of those who are of the opinion that your first bike should be a used, small bike. Find something that if you drop it a few times at low speeds (common among new riders), you aren't going to freak out. Then six months or a year from now, when you are comfortable handling your bike get what you really want.

It wouldn't hurt to get a "Ride like a Pro" dvd to watch, your local library might have one.
Good luck and welcome

You're thinking correctly. Keep on asking questions. Get as much information as you can, from as many people as you can. No one person knows it all. Take it all in, and enjoy the ride.
