Years ago when just about all dealers gave HOG members a discount this was a no-brainer. Different story now. Most dealers no longer give us a discount. If your dealer still gives the 10% discount on merchandise and service that alone makes it worth while. I stay a member for two reasons: 1. I find riding in Florida to be rather boring compared to the W. NC mountains where I used to live, so group riding with my HOG chapter makes it more enjoyable. 2. For an additional forty some dollars you can get Harley's premium roadside assistance which covers your scoot PLUS up to 3 of your cages. Much cheaper than AAA.
My chapter has a lot of good people. When I joined I felt welcomed. They also do a lot of rides and road trips. Glad I joined.
Lotsa Internet crap disparaging Harley Davidson MC's but a lot of Riders ride em. Lotsa Internet crap disparaging HOG but a lot of Riders belong to it. I agree with indiandave. The value rests on the local chapter and local Dealer support. If thats in place, the magazine, the map, website, cheap roadside assistance and participation incentives are,, "Lipstick on the HOG", so to speak .
HOG is pretty good value for what it does. Try joining a group with clubhouse facilities (Dealer provided for HOG) and participation incentives comparable to HOG's. Let us know what the dues are. Better yet, let us know if the other group comes with a complementary 1 year membership so you can thoroughly check it out.
I can order pretty much anything online for 20% off, no sales tax. The "discounts" they offer for phone plans and hotels are easily obtainable by other means. I don't care about roadside assistance- I have a phone and credit card in the unlikely event I'd need a tow I'd actually have pay for it myself (but I'm a bad a*s so I like taking risks!). In short, the free one year hog membership was worth exactly what I paid for it. They still send me invitations to renew. No thanks........ Oh, I did get a really cool HOG patch with my free membership, which I put on my SOA cut, but the guys at the bar still pointed and laughed at me.

If you actually have an SOA cut, that's what they were laughing at. 😀
