Like others have mentioned, I wouldn't suggest shooting someone over a motorcycle. Most thieves are not bikers, which is why you're pretty safe at an event. MC Clubs have moved on to more profitable ways of making a buck. But the pros will get your bike if they really want it, whether its disk locked, chained, alarmed, has a tracking device, under a street light parked in front of the police station, or whatever. One thing you have going for you is that Harleys are not near the top of the list of the most stolen brands.
OP; Understand the worry about protecting your new steed, we work hard for these toys. I believe the gun topic's beat to death (no pun intended). Just keep the insurance premium paid-up, saddle-up and enjoy. Don't let these geezers get you all wound-up...they'are all a bunch of softies.
Look, I am as big a 2A supporter as you will find, but if you are going to kill someone over a bike, you would be better off owning a car.
The legal fees to try to keep you out of jail , just while waiting to get to trial would be more than the bike is worth.
Bail would cost the same
Your legal fees for trial would bankrupt you, and even if you get a sympathetic jury and are found not guilty, your reputation will be shot.
I could go on, but you get my point by now.
If you are in imminent danger of grave harm, then have at it, 2 shots center mass, or the largest area of exposed flesh, or hell take a head shot or two if you have to in order to stop the threat, but you would be hard pressed to justify killing or injuring a person over a bike.
I would suggest you find a copy of Massad Ayoob's book " In The Gravest Extreme" and read it... TWICE
101% correct. I dropped way too much on lawyers because of my stupidity.
Now only pay for rock salt and lime LOL
Find out under what circumstances you are allowed to use deadly force in your state, and memorize the results. As was already said, legal fees to stay out of prison will be more than the bike is worth.
Basically your saying you would kill someone over some metal ? Ask yourself is it worth the time in court legal fees and potential jail time plus you may end up shooting the bike hell for all you know you would draw on someone else with a gun and end up getting yourself shot ? Good insurance will protect your bike a lot better then a gun ever will
