This is the statement that stands out. In the fall, it could be leaves on the road, in a shower, it could be painted lines, metal covers, or grease spots. I am sorry that when it felt squirrelly, that you did not take notice and practice avoiding them.
Experienced riders avoid turning on tar snakes. Instead they pick a path to miss them. An inexperienced rider may look at the snake having not self trained themselves to look at the bare road adjacent to the crack in the road repaired with tar. Your bike goes where you look.
It is a life lesson for you. Unfortunately, you got hurt and probably did some damage to your bike. It happens. Heal quickly and move on.
ome good tips on dealing with tar snakes here... be careful around crosswalk and intersection paint too! When that thick pavement paint gets wet (like from a recent rain) it gets slicker than snot
Pretty much those. I would also add the metal stuff on the road. Here in SF we have lots of train track from out public transportation(Cable car and trains).
If ya'll want to stop worrying about those tar snakes get rid of those damn Harley branded Dunlop 402's!!!
When I had the 402's I slipped tar snakes and road paint all the time after switching to first Dunlop 491's then American Elite's (they stopped making the 491's) I haven't slipped on any of them.
Hell I don't even notice them anymore!!
Need to also add to your list of things to be cautious around: Roads that have been milled and here in Colorado the highways where Tractor Trailers that use chains for traction in the winter that causes channels in the roadway from their chains wearing down the asphalt
Rode Utah two weeks ago, visiting all five of our National parks there. I think that state breeds Tar Snakes. I pick a line that avoids them, get a little wiggle out of the ones I hit.
its all part of the ride.
It's the state snake in Michigan, as the road heats up they get softer and afford no grip. I recently wrote to our street dept. to check the compound being used here. Seems in got real soft when it was 65* air temp. The person replied he'd check into it (yeah, yeah) and he said he never noticed it in his car, DOH!
Well, yesterday I was making a turn off a road with tons of tar filler on it and suddenly and seemingly inexplicably the front end just washed out and down I went. Broke right ankle but otherwise feeling fine. It was 90f and I noticed just prior how squirrelly my bike felt when riding over the tar crack filler but I had no idea this could be the result!!! Simply made a 15 mph right hand turn, no gravel on road, and next thing I know I'm sliding down the road with bike right behind.
Is road tar known to be this dangerous? Do I have any recourse to sue city for overuse of the tar (the road surface there is full of tar run in every which way)?? How on earth do I prevent this from happening again?
Thanks.
You can sue anyone for anything, but I don`t think it will get any traction!!!! DOHHH
Strange but I just logged on here and posted a thread about hitting a tar snake yesterday and how dangerous they can be. Then I scroll down and see your thread about the same thing. Those things really are hazardous. Hope you're feeling better and the bike isn't to mangled.
Thanks yes I noticed your post as well! Ankle if broken, need surgery. Bike got more bruised than I thought as tank is wrecked, fender bent, bars bent ish.
It's that time of year for sure.... the hotter the pavement the slipperier.
You'd think 1100+ pounds of bike/rider could get some traction.
