How does the odometer interface with the ECU? I understand that on later bikes the odometer reading is stored in the ECU and plugging in a new speedo causes the ECU to reset the odometer.
Is this the case with a 2008
I need to change my Speedo from MPH to KPH and wonder if changing the speedometer will revert to the existing odometer reading, or use what is showing on the new speedo
your understanding is a little off. plugging in a new speedo does not automatically cause the ecm to reset the odo. there is a speedo that you can buy from hd that does have an interface cable that will download the mileage from the ecm, but they are not all like that.
I just replaced the speedo on the wife's bike. upgraded from the stock gauges, to the cvo gauges. I had to have the moco set the mileage on her speedo. worked out great. the mileage I picked ended up being 1 mile off the actual mileage. so, I didn't worry about the difference. also, there was a sticker on the speedo from the factory stating 'mileage reinstated'.
