Default Forward controls are way too long...what are my options

Long story short...I bought a 99 Softail with really long forward controls. I've been riding it and managed. If I can do something with the shifter id be fine. Is it crazy to try to add a heel toe shifter to this setup lol??

I have idea of the brand of these controls but asides from re engineering the brackets do I have any options?

Find a set of stock take-offs on eBay or in here in the classifieds would be the first places to look. Trying to modify those aftermarket controls to work I think would turn into a rabbit hole not worth the effort.

Looks like a shorter shifter linkage would solve the problem to me.

Can't really tell from the pic, but you probably have the extended brackets. You could look for just the aftermarket brackets for stock location and just swap everything else out (and shorter shift rod), look for the stock setup as was mentioned or, put Fatboy or Heritage footboard setup.

Take the shift lever off the shaft and rotate it more upright to fit you. Looks to because clamped on a splined shaft.
