Some observations over the past few weeks of riding a loud Harley.
1) I am riding down a sweet residentialrural backroad. About 300 yards away, I see 2 teens on skateboards in the roadswearving back and fourthvery close to multipleoncoming automobile traffic, cars are yieldinggiving these kids a lot of needed space. I start to near the kids, and to my amazement, they hear my bike, and just stop and stare at me off to the side. I just drive by not needing to cautiously avoid THEM?I am enjoying the slight respect
2) I am in the all to familiar situation of about to be cut off by a soccer mom who is trying to get out into heavy traffic. As she abruptly jumps out she sees me, and freezes in my path. This was no big deal, as I have enough time to easily slow down. Oddly she throws the SUV into reverse and backs up about 5 feet to easily let me by?? I just drive by enjoying a little respect.
3) if I have been driving my Honda Accord auto, I would have been run over, run off the road. I am by no means an intimidating looking guy, nor do I rev the pi$$ out of my bike,I am like 5'10, and 155 lbs wet.... so it must be the silver Fatboy with the REAL loud pipes..... It's a kinda cool feeling....
Get used to it. I love it when I am splitting lanes and the cars all start to jump out of my way as they hear me from a half block a way or whatever...
I noticed a big difference riding down at Myrtle Beach last week. I knew early on when a bike with aftermarket exhaust was coming up behind and joining our group. Even with a close eye on the mirrors, there were a few times that either a crotch rocket or stock Harley exhaust would be right behind or in the lane beside me before I knew it.
A few years back, I worked as a service technician at my local H.D shop. We servicedsome of the county police bikes. I could not believe how people driving would change when they saw me as I was test riding a police bike. Blinkers on at every turn, complete stop at all signs, doing the speed limit and not 1 mph more but my favorite was seeing the front end of thier car dive from hard braking when I was approaching them head on. If they only knew it was only me!
The other day I was riding came to a stop light. I noticed a( looked like grandma )with a lil kid in a carseat. the door of the car wasnt closed. I pulled up closed and said "Mam "that the door with kid wasnt closed. She looked all scared and half igorned me I called again and pointed it out she pulled over I left.A cople of lites down she got up close and thanked me over and over. Its funny what people think is under that helmet and leathers especially when I take off my jacket with a firefighter uniform on
