I've been looking at getting a Harley recently. I currently have a metric cruiser (VL800) but want something a bit bigger as my wife like to come with me some times and it's a bit cramped. I've found a 14 switchback with less than 3k. What's a good price to pay? Also, are there any issues in particular to look for when checking it out or taking it for a ride. Also open to suggestions for other models that would be good for a bit of touring as well as cruising around. Thanks in advance!
I would look seriously at a touring bike. An Electra Elide or Road Glide would be much better suited for you and your wife when touring. Plus if you get the detachable tourpak you can still cruise around in style. You could even look at a Street Glide and get a better seat and backrest for when your wife joins you.
Anything after 2009 will have the new frame design and anything after 2014 will be the new Rushmore design.

My first bike was 00 flhtc. And I had never ridden before. A friend of mine rode it home for me from the dealer. I biffed the first time I rode it. Transitioning from dirt to asphalt I dumped the clutch and next thing I knew I was sitting on my *** and bike was across the street.
Just a little bit of humor on a Monday. But, as some old boy told me, one time, get ya sumpin you're gonna be comfortable with. If I'm a big guy 6'2" and 2%$ pounds and so I picked the bike you see in my pic. Had around 30K on it when I bought it in 06 and in 9 years I put at least 110K on it before my accident last year.
I'm just getting started in the "looking to buy" process too.
I haven't been looking at switchbacks, but a new 2016 lists for $17.2k, For a basically stock bike, I would not go above $14.5 for great condition. If the bike has additions that you like, adjust depending on what you value.
Also, if you wife is looking to ride more than just a little, set you sights on one of the touring bikes, the fairing and bags also come off the Road King. Also, thanks to the M8, there are some good, used Road Kings around right now, and probably will be into next year. I am guessing there will not be as many Dyna riders upgrading.
Study prices on e-bay and Craig's list, keep in mind there are a lot of people that list very high (I see 3 year old bikes on Craig's list, listing higher than a new bike.. the seller is over estimating the worth of the pipes he added).
personally i'd go older. You can get great condition Evo Ultra Claissics for about 7-9k I just traded my 2002 FXSTDi (Softail Deuce) for a Ultra....It's night and day difference on long rides.
I forgot to mention the extras that are included. Hi-flow air cleaner, dynojet powervision tuner, street bob solo seat (as well as stock seat), smoked signals (as well as stock). Also, I found out that it was in a collision with a deer. It wasn't laid down but it bent up the front good they said. All the repairs were done at a Harley dealer though. Lowest I have negotiated is 10500.
I would stay away from an accident bike or knock the price down to maybe $8500. You could get a decent deal across the border in Ontario the US dollar is at a good exchange right now.
