Got a new appreciation for that little shifter peg
So I'm crusing along and go to downshift and my foot keeps on going down. Look down and the shifter peg decided to jump off somewhere down the road. Is that going to ruin my ride...nope. I was able to cach the lever with the edge of my boot and upshift that way, downshifted by stepping on the lever but it sure is easier using that little shifter peg!
RE: Got a new appreciation for that little shifter peg
Same thing happened to me about a week after I got my bike. Fortunately I was in my neighborhood. I went to downshift at a stop sign about 100 yards from my house, and my foot went right through to the ground. I knew it was there at the last stop sign, so I pulled my bike up to the house and went back and walked down the middle of the street, and sure enough, there was my shifter peg laying in the middle of the street. I learned the value of Loctite that day.

I lost both the toe and heal shifter the other day whole shaft came out and they were gone when I tried to downshift at the stop sign but a cager pulled up to me and told me I lost my handlebars up the mountain a bit and where to look. shifted with my hand and got back up the mountain and there they were in the ditch, broken toe shifter and all, I had to flip the heal shifter over and use it on the front to get home. At least I get to replace the stock toe shifter peg for a chrome on now.
RE: Got a new appreciation for that little shifter peg
I was going through some mountainous 20mph curves and went to downshift on the switchback and it down shifted, and my foot slipped past the shift lever, and I saw the gleam of chrome metal skipping over the cliff as I swooped into my turn.
I used loctite on the new toe shifter
I even look down at it once in a while now
I learned something from that incident, and still had about 110 miles to go to get home
Fortunately I had a spare toe shift peg, thatI bought at a swap meet for a couple bucks, over at my cousins house at the edge of town.
RE: Got a new appreciation for that little shifter peg
You guys have them falling out & I can't even get mine off to replace it with a new custom! The next thing that I'm going to try is a heat gun to warm up the shift lever & hopefully break down the locktite.

RE: Got a new appreciation for that little shifter peg
After not riding for about 20 years, I bought a 2006 Dyna Super Glide in April of last year. Picked it up and proceeded to put about 80 miles on it the first day. Lost the shift peg about half way through it. Luckily it was in a local park and I was able to find it by making a couple of laps and keeping my eyes on the ground.

Protrucker: If you have some old wrenches that you don't care about and a torch, you can heat the wrench, put it on the nut, give it a few seconds and it will break the loctite usually. If not repeat and the second time always works. This method works with allen bolts, etc. Use a crappy one for heating and switch to a good one to loosen.
