Default Extended Warranties

Got my 1st Harley on black friday was very surprised about HDs warranties only lasting 2 years. Other companies give four years on most of there motorcycles just seems different feel like HD is been nickel and dimeing me since i bought my Road Glide Ultra.

How long to you guys stay with the extended warranty i know you can renew it every two years. Just want to hear from you riders and what you have been doing.

Thanks Happy Holidays to All.

I got the extended warranty for 2 years included in my purchase deal.
Of course in reality I actually paid for it, only that it's cost were hidden in the deal.

I never used it but don't regret getting it.
It's just like any other insurance policy; you hope you never need it but am glad you have it if you do need it.

I chose not to renew it when it expired and don't regret that decision either.....yet.

Unless you are doing some major mileage every year you are money ahead putting the funds you would have spent on the extended warranty in the bank for any possible future repairs. Some have had costly issues covered but I believe it is a small percentage. Just my opinion, I am sure you will get many opinions on here which has been discussed to death over the years. A search should produce all these threads.

HD has always sold bikes that were complete, just customizable to your comfort and style. That's where the nickel and dimeing comes in. Actually, it's more like hundreds and thousands. lol

As far as extended warranties, I never buy any, on any product I purchase. I figure the money i save can repair and replace anything needed. This process has not failed me yet. If I don't have enough confidence in my purchase to think it's going to last, I should rethink the product.

Extended warranties are just like gambling, with the warrantee company being the casino. You are betting the item is going to fail before the warrantee expires. The company is betting it's going to last. Your betting odds are not in your favor, just like a casino. The companies have data they use to weight the odds in their favor. That's how those insurance companies make millions, just like casinos.
I call them a crap shoot. If you've ever played craps, you'll understand the concept.

Good luck with your decision.

Congrats and enjoy your new bike...

I'm curious, what other companies give a 4 year warranty on most of their motorcycles?

Both of my Suzuki's came with a 1 year as well as a Honda I had, it was also a 1 year warranty...I know that the Kawasaki Concourse has a 3 year warranty, but their other bikes don't have the same.

Ooooooooooops, sorry, I thought you were talkin' about factory warranties.

Never mind, carry on.

If you plan to keep the bike the extended warranty is well worth it in my opinion. They have always paid for themselves plus some.

Keep in mind you do not have to purchase it right away. I usually wait right to the last month before the two year factory expires and buy then.

Good luck and enjoy your new bike.

who gives a 4 year warranty with their bike? most of the other mfg I've checked are giving a 1 year warranty, with a couple at 2 years.

the 'extended' warranties are not really warranties at all. they are service plans, and as such, do not offer the consumer the same protections that a true warranty has. some mfg may choose to use the esp as a selling tool, offering to include one in the sale of the bike. you could do the same thing with hd, just you get to choose a la carte what goes into your otd price.

i'd like to hear more about hd 'nickle and diming' you since black Friday. may be that you had unrealistic expectations?

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I paid for a 5 year, and forget how much I paid for it, but even though I had several claims I'm probably well behind. The one thing it gets you is priority service...but that's at a cost. Even with the warranty, because of some issues, I've done a few repairs on my own:
- clutch
- in a few days replacing the SE compensator (that the dealer replaced under ESP) , with a Baker compensator.

If you are cash strapped, and would not be able to fund a repair, maybe then it would make sense to add the ESP and finance it.

But, if you have adequate cash reserves, I think it's worth the gamble to go without.

FWIW, I do have adequate cash funds, but I'm trying to trim my monthly spend. So, I'm giving very serious thought to trimming some insurance and/or significantly increasing deductibles so insurance is more of a catastrophic coverage. Insurance, including healthcare, is my largest expense.

Hey OP, what MC comes with a 4 year warranty? I know of several brands that only go one year, others that go two like Harley, but I'm curious as to which ones go longer than two. Not counting extended plans here, just the base warranty. What one comes with a 4 year?

And exactly how are you being "Nickel and Dimed"? My bike came all ready to ride. I've added a few things to it since I bought it, but that was my choice.

I opted to pass on any extended warranty or service plans when I bought my bike, I have enough money to pay as I go for any repairs I may encounter. So far I've not needed any.

1. It's not an extended warranty, it's an Extended Service Plan. Different.

2. No other motorcycle has a 4 year factory warranty.

3. The H-D two year factory warranty is "unlimited mileage". That's important if you don't own a garage queen.

4. The Extended Service Plan covers MORE than the factory warranty. That's why it runs concurrently with the factory warranty. It covers Rental Reimbursement, Pickup Reimbursement, and Travel & Lodging Reimbursement.

5. For example, the 5 year ESP ends 5 years from the day it goes in service, not 7 years from the day the bike goes in service. So, you're getting all of the extras in #4 above added to the 2 years of the original factory warranty.

As has been mentioned, unless you do real mileage, it's probably not worth it. Even if you do a lot of riding, you're still betting/gambling on whether or not something breaks. I put 25,000 miles on my RGS in the first 14 months I've owned it, I'll probably break 50k by the end of next year, and I fully intend to keep it at least 4 years, so it made sense for me to pop for the 5 year ESP.

As always, ymmv.
