Welcome to the Forum from Kansas!

I would highly recommend getting a service manual.

Primary is usually 26 oz.

Fill it with the bike level, like this:

To this level:

The primary is it's own oil reservoir, where is yours feeding from?

I figure your riding a 78 Glide, I fill the primary to the very bottom of the clutch basket. The starter ring gear will fling the oil around and provide adequate lube to the chain and components. Most clutch plates now are wet or dry, a little extra wont hurt if they are wet or dry.

The older bikes were not like that, I figure the OP has a older Glide.

the older bikes did not require you to put anything in the primary as they were fed from the oil pump. either fix it or disconnect it and then run a closed primary and add oil of choice.

Yep, I read the OP as having his feed plugged off as most older stuff had done to keep primary and eng oil separated.
