I don't mind wearing a helmet on a trip, but it irks me every time I get to a mandatory lid state that if I want to run from the Hotel to a restaurant I have to put it on to go a mile or two.
I am guessing that 90% of the riders out there are not in favor of adult motorcycle helmet laws. Every morning I ride about 3 miles to my exercise location without a helmet. The rest of the day riding I am about 50/50 on wearing my helmet.
Keeping my fingers crossed that the current bill in Florida doesn't even make it to the house or senate floor for a vote.
When the states Hospital ERs are required to provide you with emergency services regardless if you have insurance or not, then they should be able to do whats necessary to prevent you from needing those services. I had been told at one time that the no helmet law in AZ requires you to carry proof of health insurance. Of course, that's 3rd hand information. for what its worth.

Going with that logic, maybe the state should be able to restrict you from doing any dangerous activities without insurance. Maybe you should not be able to ride a motorcycle at all.
BTW, I am pretty sure the proof of health insurance in AZ is a myth. I have had a house in the state for 17 years, and have never heard of that.

Well, just think how much money taxpayers could save if so many things that are hazardous to your health were made illegal. Alcohol causes many health issues besides drunk drivers, so let's ban alcohol. Same with cigarettes. Driving too fast is dangerous, lets put 55 mph governors on all vehicles, including bikes. Big Macs and large sodas are fattening, they should be banned. And on and on, where does the nanny state stop?

All of those things are coming once the correlations can be made.
People who smoke already pay more for insurance. If it were not for the tobacco lobby, cigarettes would be illegal. You can't smoke in most public places, you can't smoke on planes. You can't buy them unless you are 21. All of these restrictions are to mitigate the damage, the cost of which is understood by the health care costs for not only smokers but others affected by it who didn't smoke.
It's not nanny state - it's insurance cost. The state doesn't care if you wear a helmet. The insurance companies that know costs will be higher if people don't wear helmets drive this. They have no other stake in the game but to reduce costs, which shows that not wearing helmets increases them.
