Hey Guys. I have an 06/Street Bob with 40k + miles on her. I bought it used from Missions Indian in Bourne, TX about 8 months ago. I have had a few problems with it but I love the bike, I've wanted a Dyna forever, so this is the bike for me. However. I've had repairs and on tranny and since have troubles with 5th and 6th gears. Afer its warmed up some and I put it in N it grinds, like I've down shifted at too high an RPM then it makes a rattle noise that sounds likeshaking an empty spray paint can. Also when I shift to 6th it jumps on me, like engine is reving up now its doing this in fifth gear. What's going on with my bike?
[QUOTE=OlAndrew;16066176]I'd start with a real good careful clutch and primary chain adjustment. Might make at least part of the problems go away.[/QUOTE
my sporty was doing adjusted primary take up and went away the jumping And also clutch adjustment for grinding into gear. Luck. Wild Bill
It's odd that it happened after your tranny was worked on...or maybe not.
The 2006 models was the first year of the 6 spd tranny in the FX frame. The first 1/2 of the production year the factory went cheap with the primary cases...and left out some alignment dowels. So inner primary to tranny mounts may or may not have been precisely lined up at the factory when mated. In which case, the inner primary bearing (IPB) got stressed...and would fail very quick. In some cases, at less than 10 miles...for other people...more miles.
If you're at idle with the clutch released...you hear a chatter like a 1960's metal wheeled skateboard wheels being rolled quickly with the palm of your hand. Pull the clutch in a bit..and the noise goes away. Release the clutch...noise returns.
You can do some searches in this forum, you'll find quite a few threads about the 2006 Dyna inner primary bearing failures...and the various fixes. I had a long thread about it way back then....I tried a few fixes like installing a Baker inner primary...didn't like that, went with a 2007 IPB..and that worked. Most people didn't have a lot of luck getting the dealership to fix it, but a few did...it was often called the "full monty fix"..where the moco replaced the inner primary case and tranny with the later 2006 production models which had the alignment dowels.
The second common problem with 2006 FX's...the "stator". At the front of your primary. Basically it's like an alternator in your car. Anyways, the early models did not have some mount bolts "tack welded"...and those bolts would slowly back out over time. Eventually interfering with the copper winds of the stator..and making a tremendous metal chipping/grinding noise and filling the inside of the primary with tons of copper spaghetti. The fix is to have a later model stator installed.
Just some things to check on....I went through both of those problems back a few bikes ago when I had my 06 FXDBI.
