So feel kinda stupid but been on bike for years but finally bought a Harely and love it, 100th anniversary Wide Glide, but bought private and don't understand the key fob/alarm thing works, my bike didn't come with the owners manual so really kinda lost.
I know you need to keep the fob close and the bike will run and start but the other day with my fobs in the house over 50feet away I wanted to see what happens if I tried to start the bike and it ended up starting and running no problem and the key fobs were nowheres near the bike so how did that happened? Do I have to hit the button on the fob after I turn the ignition off ?
Either there is no security installed or it's been disabled.
^^^This. Different bikes will also pick up the FOB at different distances (not 50'). On my CVO you have to be right next to the bike or sitting on it. On my wife's Sportster it will pick it up from about 5' away. If you do get it working, carry an extra battery with you.
The year of the bike will determine what type of FOB you will have. My '02 and '05 FOBS you press on the center to arm or disarm the silent alarm. My 2013 is a proximity FOB.

100th anniversary would be a 2003
Back then, they were still using a FOB with a push button to arm/disarm.
