I bought an HJC modular and when I sized my head it said a 2x would fit but I ordered a 3x and am very pleased now. It just came in this week and today was my first time riding with it. A 30 minute ride to work and so far so good.
I've done the same thing to my helmets because of the shape of my melon. It does work and certainly better than trying to take take up the slack with other materials...

Good luck with your search...

Unfortunately doing that will degrade the integrity of the shock absorbing materials of some helmets. It's a much better idea to shop around and find a helmet that properly fits instead of using a hammer to make it fit.

this site should help you find just what you are looking for. You need a helmet that fits your head not a bunch of rags around your head.

Pretty cool website. That would definitely be useful for those who can't or won't go to a store that has a bunch of different helmets to try on.

A well fitting helmet makes a HUGE difference! And an ill-fitting helmet only turns every ride to misery. If you know for sure you're a long-oval, then order an Arai Signet Q or X in the correct size today. You'll be very glad you did.

OP, if you have a Cycle Gear near you, take a trip to their store and try on a bunch of different helmets.
Meh! Close enough.

That lidpicker site is very helpful. I was thinking of a cheaper Icon helmet but the one Icon helmet on that list wasn't very long oval.

Lots of options.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to look at the Arai helmets but not sure I can afford one after dumping all my available money into a new bike - ha.

My local Cycle Gear was next to useless as far as trying to figure out what size I needed. They didn't even have a single Arai in XL in stock.

The issue as well is that a helmet that seems OK when I try it on is not so OK after a 30 minute ride.

Thats why I look like a weirdo walking around the store with a helmet on for about an hour.
