I'll run mine until the rear rocker is slightly warm. With the carb I have it's either on or off with the choke, and if it's not sufficiently warm it won't idle.
I used to let my Shovelheads warm up a bit and then I'd take it easy on acceleration even when entering the highway.
I followed this with the earlier EVO's as I (and some others) had some gasket issues and figured this may have been a contributing factor.
With the T/C's I let them warm up a bit depending on what time of the day it is but I still go easy on the throttle for a while. If I'm leaving on a trip and leave before 8:00AM I push the bike put, start it up, put the garage door down and leave. I "chug" down my road to the county road as quietly as I can so I don't P**s off the neighbors.
Every engine need a 'warming up' before loaded. Because, what is 'loaded' actually?. 'Loaded" is a mechanical load on all the main bearings, caused by the combustion stroke of the engine. That means, that the lubrication of the bearing must be of sufficient pressure and penetration of lubricant in all parts of a bearing. The cold oil need to be warmed up before this is obtained. When idling this internal mechanical load is limited to a minimum, during riding away there is a higher torque and rpm needed and therefor the lubrication must be optimal before increasing the load by riding away. Therefor, 30 seconds is the minimum for 'warming up', depending on your oil basic viscosity and ambient temperature. Depending on the ambient temperature I warm up between 45 seconds and 1.5 minutes. Shorter in higher temperatures, longer in colder weather.

First ride of the day, 5 minutes. After that depends on the temp outside. Allways enough time for the Oil to start circulating. Reading this thread makes me wanna ask the next guy I'm about to buy a bike from. If he says he fires it up and drives away, NO DEAL

Na, haven't ya heard? It's cool to rev you bike and be a dickbag, if your neighbors don't like it they aren't American and those A-holes can just move! It's your right!
