All the apps seem to want to get you there the quickest route. Or you have to pick a bunch of stop points where I don't really want to stop. When I'm on my bike I'm looking to go the long way, side roads, etc..
Anyone find an app that lets you set a customized route? Really not looking to buy a stand alone gps which is why an app is preferred.
Looks like Google maps updated their map system quite a bit. They made it pretty easy to plan a route on the computer and send it to your phone for turn by turn directions. It used to be a PIA.
The Google map "on the phone" still doesn't seem to let you plan a route though.
Microsoft Streets and Trips. Although, getting ready to go on our 4th cross country trip, and haven't found anything that works
well. HD Ride Planner is limited, difficult to upload and unless I'm doing something wrong does not like long trips. Microsoft will not upload to HD Nav system, we use an aftermarket GPS, hand load the trip, and just use the Nav system to find HD dealers, hotels etc.
Look in to the Co-Pilot app. There's a one time charge but it works well. It will take a little to get used to trip planning but once you do, it'll be worth it. Can only be done on device (iPhone, iPad, etc). Can't share routes though. They keep saying they're working on that but not available yet.
Hmm.... I ride both alone and in groups. I like both.
Sometimes, leading a ride of 20 or more bikes it's a fantastic feeling to look in your mirrors and see a column of heavy metal behind you.
Group riding is also a good opportunity to help riders who may not be fully competent to improve. Observe, feedback and help them get better. Even if you have idiots in your group, they don't have to be idiots for very long if they get the correct feedback.
Then of course when you are solo, you can just let it rip with no worries.
I use my laptop at home, compare it with my road atlas and my HOG Touring Handbook.
For H-D dealership locations, I use my bike navigation system on the road and I also have the H-D app in my cell phone to help me with the up-to-date locations, store hours and telephone numbers.
I've used the GPS on my '13 H-D (Garmin 660) and it's unbelievable how many dealerships that have incorrect addresses, directions or that have closed since that program was developed.
Many dealers have attempted to have this corrected with little success.
