My boombox on my 2017 FLHXS has been locking up so I'm trying to update the software. The onscreen message says "Authenticating ISO version. Remove USB to cancel" (approx.) But then the message disappears without me doing anything and reverts back to the home screen. I've let it go for longer than it should and still nothing but the home screen - no prompt to update or anything other than the home screen. I'm computer literate FWIW.
Download a fresh version of the software, the file you have now could be corrupt.
Try the fresh download on a different USB drive, the one you have may not be working correctly, also make sure it's formatted on FAT32. Using a Mac? Those seem to create problems for a lot of people because the format is different.
You can also try first resetting your current system, and then try to update it.
1. Make sure ignition switch is off
2. Press and hold the Power/Mute button and turn the ignition to ACC
3. Continue to hold the Power/Mute button for 2 seconds after the warning screen appears.
4. Release the Power/Mute button, accept the warning, and you should be in the diagnostics menu. You'll see the option to reset the system.
Thanks Cygnusx51. No. Windows 10. I'll give your suggestions a try. Here's another related question: there are actually 3 files in the downloaded zip - the ISO, an MDL and a text. Is the ISO the only one that needs to be on USB drive?
Yeah, only the largest file within the downloaded folder is necessary for the software update.
Be sure to load this file, and only this file to the flash drive. It cannot be within any folders, it has to be in the main directory as a stand alone file.
Also, check to make sure that your Nav system doesn't have any active routes trying to run when you try to update the software. I believe I read here that it can sometimes mess with the update procedure.

Thanks. But still not working. I called my stealership service department and apparently it's a fairly common issue. They said to come in and they'd try it with their USB drive. I didn't ask how much.
If the file is still zipped, the system will say the file is corrupted or incompatible. I got that when I first tried the file for FLHX. The one for FLHXS is different. I used Windows built-in open/copy and 7-Zip extraction. Same result regardless. The system immediately pops up a message saying that it is authenticating the file. That tells me the file is OK. If the authentication is failing, there should be a message to that effect. It seems to me that a software glitch is causing the program to abort before the Update? Yes/No screen can be displayed. I worked in I.T. before I retired.
